Friday's monthly options expiration delivered a textbook bearish ambush. A cluster of five 0DTE SPX put sweeps totaling over $2B in premium hit the tape at 09:02 ET — before most retail traders had poured their first coffee — and price spent the rest of the session trying to recover from the damage. SPY opened at 772.58, briefly tagged a session high of 772.73, then collapsed to 760.66 before clawing back to close at 763.13, down 1.12% on the day.
The real story was in the volatility market: VIX spiked as high as 20.76 intraday — a 31% surge from yesterday's close — before compressing back to 19.99 by the close, even as equities remained deep in the red. That SPY fell 1.12% while VIX closed down 3.52% is an unusual divergence, suggesting the vol crush was mechanical (OpEx gamma decay and put premium bleed) rather than a signal of genuine calm. QQQ bore the brunt, closing at 709.90, down 2.49%, with tech names META, MSFT, TSLA, and NVDA all contributing to the rout.
GEX walls are price levels where dealers hedge aggressively. Price tends to gravitate toward Max Pain and stall near walls.
