What looked like a routine monthly expiration morning turned into a broad selloff. SPY opened near 772, reversed hard, and is now trading at 767.42 — below its 770 put wall and well under the max pain level that was supposed to act as a gravitational anchor today. QQQ has fallen all the way to 716.88, piercing its 715 put wall region and sitting 13 points below max pain at 730.
The session's opening 0DTE flow told the real story: four simultaneous SPX put sweeps totaling over $595 million hit at 09:02 ET — strikes 7740, 7735, 7730, and 7720, with vol/OI ratios as high as 36x. That kind of coordinated early-morning put buying in a negative GEX environment meant dealers were not a stabilizing force today. With VIX up to 17.27 and VVIX at 95.38, the volatility complex has re-priced materially off the morning lows.
GEX walls are price levels where dealers hedge aggressively. Price tends to gravitate toward Max Pain and stall near walls.
