All three major ETFs — SPY, QQQ, and IWM — are opening higher this morning, with QQQ leading the charge at +0.57% vs yesterday's close, powered by a SpaceX-driven AI chip rally lifting names like NVDA (+1.82% pre-market). The setup, however, is more complex than a clean breakout: SPY and QQQ are already trading above their respective call walls entering the cash open, on a day that combines MWF 0DTE expiration with VIX monthly settlement (Vixpiration), a cocktail historically associated with compressed intraday ranges and violent mean-reversion if gaps fail to hold.
VIX is sitting quietly at 17.10 with VVIX at 97.15 — both subdued — and 76.7% of SPY's 0DTE volume is concentrated within 0.28% of max pain at 769. That's a powerful gravitational force. The question for today is whether the fundamental momentum from earnings season and AI headlines can sustain a breakout above the call walls, or whether 0DTE pinning mechanics drag price back toward max pain as the session matures.
GEX walls are price levels where dealers hedge aggressively. Price tends to gravitate toward Max Pain and stall near walls.
