Thursday looked like a risk-off day on the surface — SPY closed -0.40%, QQQ shed -1.24%, and NVDA dropped another -2.74% — but the NYSE advance/decline ratio finished at 1.70:1, meaning more stocks rose than fell by a wide margin. Gold caught a bid (+0.77%) while crude faded hard from its opening levels, and VIX actually declined -1.34% to 15.41 despite the tech weakness. The market internals told a different story than the mega-cap tape.
The session opened with aggressive 0DTE put sweeps in QQQ — three separate sweeps totaling roughly $450M in premium hit at 09:35 ET, all bearish. Those bears were largely rewarded: QQQ printed a low of 743.28, breaching the 745 max pain level, before recovering to close at 748.30. But SPX ended the day at 7765.36, up +1.18% on the session, closing comfortably above its 7700 put wall and pressing toward its 7800 call wall. Friday's setup is a tale of two markets — small-caps pinned near their call wall, QQQ still structurally weak, SPX holding the high ground.
GEX walls are price levels where dealers hedge aggressively. Price tends to gravitate toward Max Pain and stall near walls.
